Apple Sends Out Invitations for IPad 2 Event on March 2

 
 
Apple today sent out invitations for an event that is expected to introduce the next iPad on March 2, as the company plans to unveil "what 2011 will be the year of."

The Cupertino, Calif.-based company will hold the invitation-only show at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Details were usually cryptic, but the peeled-back calendar page subtly shows an iPad.
Apple has yet to unveil the iPad 2, but the new tablet is expected to be thinner, lighter and more powerful than the current model, people familiar with the device said. It has a more streamlined shape, similar to the current iPod Touch, and features two cameras, one for high-definition photos and videos, and another for FaceTime video chat.
The new iPad will initially be available through AT&T and Verizon, these sources said, leaving Sprint and T-Mobile out in the cold again.
Since Apple launched the original iPad last April, a number of companies are gunning for a piece of the surging tablet market. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, Samsung, Motorola and Research in Motion showed off a slate of Android-based "iPad killers," many with high-end features such as 4G access.
